A street punk band from Notts who have honed the form down to a perfect fiery concoction of frustration, anger and energy with the kind of great yob choruses that have made Cock Sparrer kings of the current scene but with an added melodic touch that makes them really stand out.

Las Vegas – Sunday, May 27, 2018

I was so stoked when we entered the Fremont Country Club and the Old Firm Casuals was on stage! After being stuck in the elevator at Golden Nugget Hotel and Casino for 20 minutes, we got off to a late start. We had rushed from the Main Stage at Punk Rock Bowling and we jumped straight into a waiting elevator. Because everyone was arriving back to the hotel at about the same time, people were piling into the elevator and left us barely enough room to stand in place shoulder to shoulder. We got about 2 floors up and then the elevator just quit. After slowly sinking back down to the ground floor, we called the front desk. People were starting to panic and when we got a person on the other line, they proceeded to interrogate us to ensure we were staying at the hotel and not just random guests. In a unified yell, we all proceeded to say “Fuck You!” get us out of here! The hotel staff didn’t seem fazed by our problem, so like most punk rock McGyvers, we all started trouble-shooting, pulling on the doors, and eventually finding a latch to let us open the elevator and climb out to safety! After getting back to the room and getting our bearings, we rushed out to the Fremont Country Club and to our delight, the Old Firm Casuals were on stage kicking ass. It helped to reset our attitudes and bring us back to our Punk Rock state-of-minds!

Dead Boys

Backstage Bar & Billiards, Las Vegas – Saturday, May 26, 2018

I heard a lot of grumblings about the Dead Boys show at Backstage Bar & Billiards at this year’s Punk Rock Bowling club series. And, as a longtime Dead Boys fan, I understand the fear, the reality that this show could destroy your fantasy Dead Boys appearance. Stiv throwing himself off the stage, belt around his neck, in a reckless show of dysfunctional self-pity in the seemingly true hope that this will be the show that kills him. How do you find a stand-in for the energy and charisma of someone who truly does not give a shit? A true punk from before the days of big festival shows and sponsored record tours.

The Briefs
Punk Rock Bowling 2018

The Briefs took the stage in the middle of the Day on Sunday and I wasn’t sure what to expect. This was my first time seeing them and as I watched Steve E. Nix walking the stage, smoking a cigarette, I was wondering how good they would actually sound. I always wonder how some people can smoke and sing, but there are a lot of vocalists that are pulling if off. As soon as the band started they were captivating. As they continued to play, I kept thinking to myself… I need to get their album, I need to get a shirt, I hope this isn’t their last song! They were great! Also, since this is Punk Rock Bowling, I actually ran into Steve E. Nix at the Golden Nugget Casino and I said “Hello”, and Steve was super down-to-earth and friendly. That always amazes me, for some reason I assume that band members are going to tell me to “piss-off”, but at this event, it’s like we are all just here to mutually appreciate great music and make friends.

D.O.A.

One of the best and most entertaining performances of the weekend was D.O.A. (in my opinion). As a photographer and punk rock fan, I loved every minute. These days it is quite frequent that you will see the band stand in one place, right in front of their microphone. But not D.O.A., they were all over the place. Also worth noting, was Mike Hodsall (Bass Guitar), if you didn’t get a picture of him jumping then you simply didn’t want one. He is a prime example of why I love Bass Players. Maybe it’s because they only have 4 strings, but they are typically very hard working band members. D.O.A. has 3 very active and super talented musicians, that is why their show was so great (and because they have some really good songs too)!

GBH
Punk Rock Bowling 2018

GBH are truly a great sounding band. Their performance was super tight and the crowd at Punk Rock Bowling was very responsive as they both sang along and thrashed about in the large circle pit in front of the stage. I absolutely love this band. It was one of those unique treats that you get with the Punk Rock Bowling event, when each night we ran into Scott Preece in the Golden Nugget hotel and casino. Scott is a super fun and friendly person and we all got a kick out of briefly hanging out with him and his mates.

Svetlanas
Punk Rock Bowling 2018

This was the first time I have seen/heard the Svetlanas. From the first minute they took the stage I knew they were going to be spectacular. Olga (the singer) was walking around the stage and looking from person to person with her tongue in the corner of her mouth and her eyebrow cocked. It was a quirky look that said she was going to erupt.
