The Melvins, Redd Kross, and The Side Eyes

Observatory OC – September 4th, 2019

There was a great show at The Observatory last Wednesday night with The Melvins, Redd Kross, and The Side Eyes. The Observatory, as always, is a kick ass venue… well organized and fun for all ages. You can expect to see fans ranging anywhere from 5 years old to 80 years young! To begin the night, The Side Eyes played an amazing, high energy set with Astrid McDonald rocking a great look and dancing around the stage for the entire set! The singer, Astrid McDonald, Jeff McDonald’s daughter (singer of Redd Kross), and Steven McDonald’s niece (bassist of Redd Kross and The Melvin’s), got the crowd very engaged in their performance with her demanding voice. The crowd started a pit while The Side Eyes played, which is a great endorsement for an opening band. They were probably my favorite band of the night, although The Melvins and Redd Kross made it hard to decide. Next, Redd Kross played in Red and White coordinated suits. They played songs from their new album (Beyond the Door) as well as some others, everyone loved it! They had a great sound that made for a fun show. The two brothers on stage would dance with each other sometimes, as the whole band amped up the crowd. Jeff definitely influenced his daughter, made clear by their performance, where they both would dance and sing while passionately engaging the audience! The guitarist gave his pick away at one point to a fan in the crowd, further connecting with the audience even more. Their drummer had a solo at one point that blew doors!! Finally, to conclude the show, The Melvins came on after Steven had a quick outfit change… going from his all white suit to a red and black one (with matching shoes) and of course the sparkly undershirt! Steven made great faces the whole time, which the audience and photographers loved! The singer had on his trademark dress with eyes all over it and his big white hair! The performance was great! The crowd was excited and the room was full of people banging their heads to the cool beat. Crowd surfers (one after another) were climbing over people to get to the stage so they could dive off (the audience managed to not drop anyone)! Their music was really good, it had a darker and harder beat than the other bands, it was very enjoyable! Overall, the night as a whole was really fun – the music, the performance from each band, and the venue was awesome!
